The chronicle of the internet arguably started in the 1980s, the immobile computers then could only interact with each other and users were limited to the static pages on web searches. Functions of the internet gradually improved, hence, the attention given to the internet prompted individuals to startup businesses that required them to design mobile devices or software applications that were purposefully internet expedient. As expected, these devices became ubiquitous and their usage vast, supporting the steady upgrade of the internet.
All of these did not stop technology disruption from happening. This was as a result of the level of interest given to the internet by the users and how much time was spent on it moderately
The statistic shows that as of 1995, internet users were 16 million which was 0.4% of the world population, ending of 2010, it grew to 1,971 million, which was 28.8% of the world population, moving forward to march 2022, it became 5,382 million users, substantially, 67.8% of the World population.
Data referenced from the United World Stats.
The growing number of internet users makes it feasible for the then startups which are now the top tech companies invest in what is called the METAVERSE.
Originated from the Greek word, Meta-Verse means “beyond space”. The metaverse narrative contriving in our world today was once fiction, illustrated in a sci-fi novel called “Snowcrash” then detailed in various modern movies (ready player one, Free guy, etc) which now is about to go beyond just a movie as it gradually becomes the reality of our future.
THE METAVERSE
Different definitions have been introduced to explain the term but we are yet to have an in-depth knowledge of how that world would be, this might be as a result of the drive humans have to personally experience it.
However, to simply explain the term Metaverse, I would say, it is a free world where no one is crazy and everyone has the ability to become whatever they want without judgment, by basically choosing the right avatar to be represented with.
A more formal explanation, it is a virtual universe where humans become characters or avatars and still do the things they do in real life (going to work, shopping, socializing, etc) but in a digital space.
Asides from the big tech companies like Meta formerly called Facebook, Google and Microsoft who have invested in the Metaverse, there are a few luxurious clothing companies (Nike, Adidas, Gucci, Burberry, etc) who are interested and working on solutions that can meet the demands of humans in the Metaverse.
Nike for instance is working on kicks that can be owned by an individual in the physical world and as well be worn in digital reality. One shoe can be worn in both the physical and digital world.
Decisively, Metaverse is known as the future iteration of the internet, though web3 was originally called the future of the internet, now the metaverse has been linked to web3, by being the combination of virtual reality, cryptocurrency, and many more. Web3, a decentralized web can support the operation of the metaverse, a digital space in the future.
